Can Donors Give Anonymously?
Supporters often ask whether they can give without their name showing up. The answer depends on the kind of campaign, and on what "anonymous" means to them.
On a crowdfunding campaign
Yes. The checkout has a "Hide my name" tick box, described to the donor as keeping their name off the public campaign page.
Their contribution still counts towards your total and still appears in the supporter list, listed as "Anonymous" rather than being removed. Their message, if they left one, still shows.
On a product fundraiser
There is no per-order tick box, because you need to know who each order belongs to in order to hand it over.
What you can do is turn off the public supporter list for everyone. Go to your fundraiser settings, open the Public Information tab, and untick "Show Recent Orders". The list disappears from your page entirely.
The same setting exists on crowdfunding campaigns, so you can use it there too if you would rather show no names at all rather than leaving it to each donor. Bear in mind it also removes the social proof of a visible supporter list, which usually costs you donations.
Names are never hidden from you
Choosing to give anonymously hides a name from the public page. It does not hide it from you.
Every donation and order is recorded against a name and email in your dashboard, and that record is kept whether or not the donor ticked the anonymous option. We are required to keep traceable records of who paid what, so there is no setting that makes a contribution untraceable in the backend.
It is worth explaining this to a supporter who asks for complete anonymity. Most people are happy once they understand their name simply will not be on display.
A common point of confusion
If a donor ticks "hide my name" and then sees their name in your dashboard or on a report you have shared, nothing has gone wrong. Check the public page itself before assuming the setting failed.
